More Than You Ever Needed to Know about Bob Dylan’s Christmas in the Heart
There had been rumors of Bob Dylan dabbling with the idea of an album of Christmas music for years. In fact Dylan had run through two Christmas songs — Silent Night and The Twelve Days of Christmas — during one of his 1983 “Infidels” recording sessions. On the other hand he also recorded I’m Going To Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair at another “Infidels” session, and it seemed equally unlikely that he was thinking about doing a compilation of Broadway hits.
Then there was the 1990 announcement of Dylan’s short-lived Strikin’ It Rich record label which was intended to release “rare and interesting rhythm and blues material.” But instead of rare R&B, the label would produce only one CD, the holiday-themed Christmas Party with Eddie G.
Eddie (G)orodetsky is a comedy writer with an extensive record collection who had a penchant for circulating compilations of forgotten, arcane, and weird Christmas music to friends and acquaintances. Gorodetsky would later become a producer of Dylan’s Theme Time Radio Hour and the two would go on to create over 100 Theme Time shows, including a two-hour Christmas special notable for Dylan’s reading of ’Twas the Night Before Christmas.
